Conclusion
Unfortunately, the Harry Potter series on a whole can probably not be considered a feminist series. Rowling still has some characters that perfectly align with the shallow, immature female stereotype. Luckily most of these characters are minor characters so they don’t have as much influence on the young girls reading this series. Along with this she has a few male characters who are prejudice against females, such as Ron having the double standard for his sister. In most of these cases, she does have the females stick up for themselves but it still seems as though she makes it acceptable for these characters to point things like this out. On the whole, it’s very difficult to determine if the series is completely feminine or not. One would like to hope that it is because it would open up a whole new perspective on feminists and females in general. However, I fear that it is not a completely feminist series and that our generation will have to work very hard before there is any series that is completely feminist.
Most of the girls in the Harry Potter series are extremely strong characters who do not fit in the typical female stereotype. These girls take charge of their own actions and can hold their own against anyone who tries to stop them from doing what they want to do or tries to make them feel insignificant. They are role models for new generations who will now believe that they can be intelligent and that they will be able to hold powerful positions in the world. All three of these characters exemplify both feminine and masculine traits. This not only begs the reader to question stereotypes but it also asks them of the socially constructed role of gender in our society. People reading this series begin to question if there really is just male characteristics and female characteristics or if all of these characteristics blend together to make up people.
Because of this continuing feminist movement, more authors and writers will write strong female characters into their books, shows, and movies. Eventually everyone will be equal and no one will feel that they are oppressed due to things that they cannot change about themselves, like being female. With this information about strong female characters in the Harry Potter series, we will be able to see more progressive female characters in other series and books. As more of these characters pop up, the more young girls will see that they too can be strong and intelligent and not be ashamed of themselves. With this information in mind, we can support authors who write strong female characters and encourage them to continue to do so and thus we can work toward a better understanding of everybody and reduce the prejudices seen in society today.
